Flash drives are portable and efficient for data storage. They also tend to be the most affordable data storage solution. Unfortunately, they are also fallible. 

The most common causes of flash drive failure include:

  • Physical Damage- The USB connector separates from the flash circuit board. This is usually a result of being dropped or bumped.
  • Data Corruption- This most commonly occurs when you transferring data from the device to a computer. Ensure that you safely eject the flash drive before removing it from the computer.
  • Look Up/NAND Memory Failure- If the lookup tables are corrupt, data cannot be properly converted from NAND memory to LBA addresses, therefore rendering the data cannot be recognized by your computer.
  • Damaged Passive Components- Often resulting from leaving your flash drive plugged in for long periods of time, this refers to voltage surges or shorts in the fuses of a flash drive that render a flash drive dead or overheated.

Flash Drive Scan

  1. Insert your flash drive into the USB port on your system
  2. Click “My Computer” or “My PC” and navigate to your Removable Disk icon
  3. Right-click the icon and open properties.
  4. Click “Tools”
  5. Click “Check Now”
  6. Select “Automatically fix file system errors”
  7. Select “Scan for and attempt recovery for bad sectors”
  8. Click “Start”
  9. Click “Close” upon completion

Using Windows 10 or lower?

  1. Insert the drive into the USB port on your system
  2. Click “My Computer” or “My PC” and navigate to your Removable Disk icon
  3. Right click the icon and open properties.
  4. Click “Tools”
  5. Click “Rebuild”
  6. Complete Scan
  7. Right-click the USB flash drive icon
  8. Click “Eject”
  9. Remove drive from port

The issue may not be the flash drive itself. Before you call your local technicians, test the USB port.

  1. Go to your “Start” menu
  2. Open “Device Manager”
  3. Over your USB drive, you should see an arrow. Double-click that arrow
  4. Click “Enable Device”
  5. Click “Next” twice
  6. Click “Finish”

  1. Go back to your “Start” menu
  2. Open “Control Panel”
  3. Navigate to “System and Security”
  4. Click “Administrative Tools
  5. Select “Computer Management”
  6. Right-click your USB drive
  7. Click “All Tasks”
  8. Click “Change Drive Letter and Paths”
  9. Click “Add”
  10. Click “OK”
  11. Assign a letter to your USB Drive
  12. Right-click and click “Online”
